Our Horticulture, Bushcraft, and Survival Skills programme blends the art of growing and nurturing nature with the practical skills needed to survive and thrive outdoors. Students will have the chance to engage with both the natural world and the wilderness, learning essential skills that will benefit them in all areas of life.
Horticulture
In our poly tunnel, outdoor growing areas, orchard, and raised beds, students will learn to grow plants from seed to table, fostering a deep connection with nature and the food they eat. Key learning areas include:
- Growing fruit and vegetables in our allotment and orchard
- Understanding photosynthesis and plant energy production
- Plant propagation and ground care
- Seasonal care of bedding plants
- Tree care and maintaining fruit trees
- Year-round gardening practices and the science behind plant growth
Bushcraft & Survival Skills
Bushcraft is about developing the knowledge and skills needed to survive and thrive in the wilderness. Students will gain hands-on experience in essential survival techniques, such as:
- Lighting fires using Ferro Rods, Flint and Steel
- Cooking on an open fire
- Identifying trees and plants in the wild
- Foraging for edible plants
- Building a survival shelter
- Making and using hand tools safely
- Leathercraft: Creating drawstring purses and pouches
- Knots and lashing for building survival projects
- Pioneering: Constructing projects like beds, chairs, and tables for use in survival camps
- Paracord crafts: Making bracelets, key rings, and more
Students will gain practical knowledge that helps them connect with nature while developing vital survival skills. Whether cultivating plants or building a shelter, this programme provides the foundation for a well-rounded understanding of both horticulture and wilderness survival.
